1922 Moreland Truck at Johnson's Pass

Recently I was contacted by Greg Hull, who had worked for Cal Trans for thirty-three years as a construction engineer. His Father-in-Law was Darel Kehlet, whose family bought 640 acres on the west shore of Lake Tahoe and built Meeks Bay Resort from 1915-1969. Greg had inherited many family photos showing the resort's early development and surrounding highways and by-ways. He has kindly permitted these photos to be shared.

We see the Meek's Bay Resort Truck at the top of Johnson’s Pass at Echo Summit, looking east towards Lake Tahoe. The photo dates from 1922 or shortly after. It shows a man, woman, and dog, outside the truck, which has stopped at the pass. Johnson’s Pass was always a popular spot for travelers to snap photos. Just outside the frame, to the right, would be the Echo Summit Canteen Service Station owned by TC Wholbruck, whom we discussed.

In the early days of automotive travel, trucks and cars would have to back up steep hills as these vehicles had not yet been equipped with fuel pumps. On its journey "down the hill" towards Placerville, this truck would include a drive backing up the nearby Slippery-Ford Grade on the Lincoln Highway. What an experience that must have been.

The Lincoln Highway at Meyer's, El Dorado County Part 3

Traveling from the Trout Creek Bridge, we are headed west towards the town of Meyer’s. Along the way, our Lincoln Highway map has a small truck icon along the road. Clicking the icon, we find that this was the route used in 1919 by the US Army convoy traveling from Washington DC to San Francisco.

This convoy was an attempt by the US Army to see if it could transport men and machines across the country on the new Transcontinental Lincoln HIghway. In 1919 it was still a novelty to drive across the country, and while the convoy made it, the trip was fraught with breakdowns, poor bridge crossing, deep mud, and sand. Along for the trip was Armored Corps representative, Lt. Col. Dwight D. Eisenhower, a 28-year-old officer, and future President of the United States.

There is a video record of some of the trip at the National Archives', which can be found here. When the convoy reached Meyer’s, the pioneering Celio Family, who owned much of the small town, threw a huge celebration and BBQ for the soldiers. The convoy then made the trip up Osgood’s Grade and over Johnson’s Pass.

Looking at the map above, we can see the old Osgood’s/Meyer’s Grade up to Echo Summit is closed through traffic. It’s now a popular and very steep trail on a paved surface., where we see Monica making the climb in the photo below. This was the grade everyone used to get to the south Tahoe area for 80 years, until the 1930s when the present freeway was built.

The photo above was taken by TC Wohlbrück and showed the grade looking east. This is the same section we see Monica walking on in the photo below. TC Wohlbrück was an entrepreneur who built some of the first gasoline service stations and “rest stops” in the Sierra, which he called Canteens. He built one at the top of this grade, Johnson’s Pass, and it still stands today. You can read more about TC here. We will talk about that on our next post along the El Dorado County Lincoln Highway route.

Eisenhower and Army convoy leave Washington DC headed to San Francisco

It was on July 7th, 1919 that The Army's Motor Transport Corps convoy left Washington DC headed towards San Francisco. The trip was to see if the military could move men and machines across the country using the recently "completed" Lincoln Highway as the route. They almost didn't make it, arriving in Oakland seven day's behind schedule.

The convoy included, "24 expeditionary officers, 15 War Department staff observation officers, including a young, Bvt Lt Col Dwight D. Eisenhower of the Tank Corps, and 258 enlisted men." The experience Eisenhower had on the trip helped formulate his plan as President for an Interstate Highway System, still in place today.

The National Archives has a video of some of the trip. It's fascinating to watch, and at the 18:47 mark we start to see the mountains of Nevada and California, and the climb up Meyers Grade, across the summit, and down into Kyburz at the 21:45 mark.
